How to Set Up an Alarm.com User Code

Now that you have a smart home security system, you can give people access to your home without compromising your security. You can use your Alarm.com app to turn the alarm off for visitors and unlock your smart locks remotely.

But there’s an even better way: an Alarm.com user code.

User codes give family members and trusted visitors the ability to unlock the door and turn off the alarm without your help, and without access to your Alarm.com account. A user code is easy to create and customize. You can restrict it to certain days and times and delete it anytime. You can also get an alert whenever it’s used, so you know who’s coming and going.

Here’s a quick video on how to set up a user code in your Alarm.com app. You’ll find web dashboard instructions further down.

Here’s a step by step guide to creating Alarm.com user codes with your app.

  1. Log in to the Alarm.com app.
  2. Tap the Menu icon in the top left.
  3. Scroll down and tap Users.
  4. Tap +.
  5. Enter the user’s first and last name, then tap Create.
  6. In Access Code, Enter the user’s desired code.
    1. Or tap Generate Code to have one made for you.
  7. Tap the toggle switch for the devices (i.e., panel partitions and locks) to enable/disable access for the user’s code.
  8. Tap Save. Allow a few minutes for the new user code to be active at the panel.
  9. To add user contact information, tap + Add Contact.
    1. Then tap either:
      1. Mobile number. Enter the mobile number, and select the Country and Carrier using the dropdown menus.
      2. Email Address. Enter the email address and select the Email Format using the dropdown menu.
    2. Tap Save to add the new contact information.

Here’s a quick video tutorial on setting up an Alarm.com user code from your PC or laptop.

  1. Log into the web dashboard.
  2. Click Users.
  3. Click Add New User.
  4. Enter the user’s first and last name, and then click Create.
  5. In the Access Code field, enter the desired code.

Things to know:

User codes can’t be edited while your security system is armed. You’ll need to verify that the system is disarmed before attempting to edit a user code.

You should also allow a few minutes for a new user code to become active at your security panel.
